In October 2000, Neelam married Rishi Sethia, the son of a businessman from the UK. However, the couple got divorced soon after. After a brief relationship with actor Samir Soni, she married him in 2011. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Bubble, Neelam Kothari opened up about why she spoke about her past relationship on the show Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives.

When asked why she decided to speak about her previous marriage on the show Fabulous Lives of Bollwyood Wives, Neelam Kothari said, “I think it’s the hardest thing to do. I was just discussing a conversation with the creatives, and I said, ‘You won’t believe this is what happened the other day.’ They were like, ‘This is an unbelievable story’ I mean, I resisted it a lot because I’ve never spoken about it. And they said, ‘Trust me, women are going to relate to it. You’ll be respected. You’ll come out a winner. Do it.’ I was like, ‘Okay, I trust you guys. Come on, go for it.'”

She added, “You know, I’ve gotten a lot of DMs from women saying that it’s so nice I spoke about it because not everyone, especially being a celebrity, would. It takes courage, and it makes them feel that even a celebrity, someone famous, can go through this too. It gives them a sense of comfort and strength. I have restarted life, again and again, it’s like chugging. And I think every experience in your life makes you learn hopefully you learn and it makes you stronger.”
